For all her life Alexis McKaslin has avoided settling down, instead focusing on her career as a journalist in New York. She left home at 18 and never looked back; becoming a successful, demanding and well-educated journalist. She’s dating a wealthy banker and is the epitome of New York type. After a missing persons case occurs in the beautiful seaport town of Harrisen NH, which she is from, she is forced to return to Portsmouth to write a story. A 32 year-old teacher was found dead and a high school girl is missing. The missing girl’s father Steve Morel comes from old money and owns half the town, and he and his wife Valerie are devastated by the fact that their teenage daughter is missing. Alexis’s older sister Liz is married to Bryan a successful doctor and has done the exact opposite of Alexis by settling down. Their relationship is strained, and Alexis thinks Bryan is not trustworthy. Liz and Bryan also have three children, two of whom went to the same high school as the missing girl. Alexis tries to gain information from tough but smart Detective Gwen Davis who believes that there is a connection between the man’s death, the missing girl and a murder from fifteen years prior. Alexis has a connection to the murder from all those years earlier. Detective Davis faces criticism from the police department, especially her married boss Will whom she is having an affair with. The dead teacher’s wife, Michaela Harper, is an art teacher with a troubled past who went to high school with Alexis. Alexis temporarily moves into her mother’s house, next door to single father Isaac who unbeknownst to Alexis has a connection to the murders.
