EPISODE 1X02:
"HATE CRIME"
Brad must prosecute a 16 year old boy as an adult in his next case. The boy is accused of killing his classmate with a baseball bat simply because he was gay.
Kelly assists Brad with the case as she has she has dealt with cases like this before. The boy's lawyer tries to claim that he was physically and mentally abused throughout his life, so he thought it was okay to inflict pain on another human being. Brad and Kelly fight against the motion on reason of insanity, and Silvia (the judge) buys their arguement saying that he knew what he was doing. Later that night, Greg, the other Attorney and friend, admits to Brad and Kelly that he is gay, and hopes that they can keep it a secret. He tells them, "As a gay man, this case has hit home, and I need you to do everything in your power to make sure this boy gets what he deserves." The day in court has arrived, and everyone is ready for the case to begin. The first witness to take the stand is Dr. Pauly who tells the court that the boy's brain and body showed no sign of abuse, so he did know what he was doing. The next witness is the boy's girlfriend who testifies that he had always had a hatred of gays, and hoped to terminate as many as possible. Shocked, Greg must leave the courtroom as he can not believe what he just heard. Madison, sitting at her Stenograph continues to type away, yet wonders why Greg got up and left the room. A week later, the final witness takes the stand, it is the boys mother. She tells the court that despite how much she loves her son, she believes he must go to prison for all the pain he has caused. Upset, the boy jumps up and starts screaming at her, and calling her a bitch. Rick, the baliff, rushes over to take him out of the courtroom. Two days later, the jury comes back with their decision. As they start to read their verdict, Greg begins to cry, knowing that this decision effects his life. The jury reads the verdict, and they find him guilty. After the decision is read, the six friends decide to head to the bar for their "winning drink." Greg finally admits to the others that he is gay, and they are shocked, but they support him. We later hear that the boy was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
