ANALYSIS: Christmas box office brought us 4 new releases which all were successes to varying degrees. Hindenberg and A Tale of Two Cities battled it out for the top spot, both coming in above predictions. Although both were epic, expensive and starred Anne Hathaway, they were able to draw in audiences. A Tale of Two Cities topped 50 million thanks to strong advertising campaign and pre-Oscar buzz.
Burrard's The Lies of Locke Lamora surpassed 150 million dollars over the weekend, while Hollywood My Robot opened with an acceptable 21 million dollars. In limited release, Roxo's Four Perfect Pebbles starring Renee Zellweger opened well with just above $3,000,000 at 250 theaters, with a per theater average of $12,000. Santa-Napped and Sleigh Ride barely decreased as they got the rest of the holiday audiences. CCP's Make a Girl Laugh starring Scarlett Johanssen as Marilyn Monroe expanded to 2,000 theaters, making just below $10,000,000, which is okay considering the competition. Other limited releases, such as The Last Campaign and Hold Tight continued to show strength. With good word of mouth and awards buzz, they should do well when they release wide.
