The Jewels
Inspired by musical groups The Supremes, Destiny's Child and The Marvelettes, the movies Dreamgirls and Sparkle.
In 1962, an American girl group known as The Jewelettes wins a prestigious local talent competition. The group was made up of lead singer Lauryn Wells, LeToya Johnson, Tia Jones and Michelle Franklin. News of their success spread through the community and soon got the attention of businessman Bobby Morris. He offers them a weekly gig at nightclub and promises that they would have a hit in no time if he was to become their manager. Lauryn, reluctant at first, agrees to his proposition. A few months later, they find themselves as backup singers for rising R&B star, Eddie Lauren. Traveling across the country along with LeToya's younger sister, Sharon, who is a talented songwriter and Eddie's manager Clarence James.
Bobby sees the potential for the girls and Eddie to crossover into the pop charts. He starts his own record label, Starlight Records, and is able to pursue Eddie to drop his current label and sign with Starlight. This worries Clarence but not wanting to leave Eddie, he decides to stay as his manager. Their first single as 'Eddie Lauren and the Jewelettes' fail to make an impact on the Pop charts and only managed to have minor success with R&B/soul audiences. Desperate for a Hit, Bobby turns to Payola. With a few of the top stations playing the song, it starts to climb the charts slowly. Bobby manages to get the group an appearance on 'The Ed Sullivan Show'. The group reaches the top of the charts after their appearance. Offstage, Lauryn quickly becomes infatuated with the slick-talking Bobby. Michelle starts a relationship with Eddie but doesnt know that he is a married man.
Clarence grows sick of the constant changes by Bobby to Eddie's image and sound, to the point that he drops Eddie as his client and leaves him to Bobby. But Bobby soon realizes that Eddie can never truly become a Pop act, he turns his attention back to The Jewelettes. He changes the name of the group to 'The Jewels' for a more mature image and appoints LeToya as the new and slimmer lead singer. Lauryn is infuriated but LeToya accepts the change and is excited to be in the spotlight for once. Next to Lauryn, Tia has the best vocals and was shocked by Bobby's choice. Right before the release of their first single, Tia fires Bobby as her manager, not wanted to be ignored anymore. When the single was released, Tia was shocked to find out that she was not included on the album cover and that she was out of the group. Tia sues Bobby and her former group members for what she saw as a plot to ruin her career. And this is only the beginning of their stories...
