Early Reviews
"A summer blockbuster that even the biggest critics of the genre will love. It is a fun ride that doesn't leave you feeling empty afterwards"-Variety
"Amazing special effects and great action scenes are present in this summer blockbuster, but what makes it worthy is fun story and witty and intelligernt performances from DiCaprio and McKenzie as brothers."-People
"It has adventure, romance, action, drama and wit. An intelligent summer movie that reminds us of how much fun adventure movies can be"-LA Times
Entertainment Weekly Story about Atlantis
On July 24th the most expensive movie of the year is released into theaters everywhere. Hollywood Productions spent 200 million dollars to make Atlantis, a high-sea action/adventure based off the legendary lost island. Action movies taking place mainly at sea have produced a variety of results. Cutthroat Island and Waterworld were two of the biggest bombs of the 90's, while Pirates of the Caribbean was a monster blockbuster. In 2002 an animated film based off Atlantis was released by Disney to okay box office, although it failed to make back its budget and was seen as a disappointment by critics. Although these two films are pretty much unrelated in plot, there may be some audience confusion.
The film has big names like Leonardo DiCaprio, Benjamin McKenzie, Keri Russell and Morgan Freeman, which could help. Although not traditional summer box office draws, they all have chosen their films wisely over the past few years which could be a good sign. Atlantis marks a big gamble for the studio, so we'll have to wait and see.
