There are five theaters in my town (2 regular, 1 discount, 1 IMAX, 1 independent), and only my independent theater is showing "My Life in Ruins," which cost $9 at night. Luckily, I had my Film Society Member card, so I got $3 off.
My Life in Ruins
Saturday, June 6
Movie Time: 7:00 PM
Seats: 500
Filled: 60
12%
(Mind you, this film is not mainstream, nor is the theater)
Trailers Shown Before the Movie (All are independent films, since the theater is independent.)
I graded the trailer based on my reaction, what it's about, and who's in it. They might grow on me eventually.
Trailers:
#1: Easy Virtue: D+ (Only because my mom and I tried to figure out who was in it the entire time...story sounds stupid and the film looks stupid)
#2: Every Little Step: A (I'm a Broadway nut, so naturally I'd want to see this.)
#3: Lorna's Silence: F (This looks like a piece of crap.)
#4: The Girl from Monaco: F (This looks like a piece of crap squared.)
My Expectations:
Being Greek, and with Vardalos' first film, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" currently holding the place as my favorite movie ever, I was going into this film with HIGH, HIGH, HIGH expectations, and I can say that I was not disappointed.
Positives:
Before going to the movie, the positives for me were being able to see about my culture, laughing from Vardalos' snappy, witty humor, and enjoying yet another Greek tale with those inside jokes that only Greeks get (just a few).
Setbacks:
Ugh, a frickin' romantic comedy? Sh!t. Girl falls in love with guy, blah blah blah. Cliche story...
As I watch:
"Oh my Lord, this is so frickin' funny. Mom, don't you love it? Hey, b!tch over there with your cell phone, turn it off...I don't want to miss part of the movie. Man, it's cold in here. Holy crap, here comes the cliche story part. Wait a minute! What's this? Holy sh!t, everybody, this film is NOT cliche...WTF? Way to go, Nia!" (okay, I didn't actually say any of that...)
My Experience:
After leaving the theater, I pondered what I just saw, and I can honestly say that the film is not cliche, filled with beautiful Greek sights, and downright hilarious. I went in with high expectations and received even more than I had expected. The film now currently holds the spot for my number one film of 2009 and is one of my favorite comedies of all-time.
Overall: A (I can't quite give it an A+...It wasn't as good as MBFGW...but it was pretty darn close).
FORGET THE CRITICS, SEE THIS FILM IMMEDIATELY!
If that doesn't convince you, this...might.
The film also features Harland Williams (of "Sorority Boys" fame), Rachel Dratch (of "SNL" fame), Richard Dreyfuss, Brian Palermo, and for those of us guys who like it...hot girls (and for girls, there's some handsome guys for you, too).
