Lately, her kids have been getting grief because Marcie is known as the “lamest mom at the PTA”, always bringing orange juice and rice krispie squares even to her oldest son’s raunchy college parties. Even her husband Bill (John C. Reilly) wants her to cut loose and have fun. The final straw is at Jim’s Guitar Hero tournament, when Julie’s high-spirited but lame cheering distracts Jim’s opponent so much that it gets Jim disqualified. Julie’s three kids demand that their mom “get cool” because she’s ruining their social lives. Determined to win back the affection of her kids, Julie takes up Guitar Hero. She goes out of her way to throw wild parties for her oldest son’s friends, cranking up the music loud enough to wake all the neighbors. Later on, she decides to enter a Guitar Hero tournament to prove to her kids that she really is the "awesome mom."

Then, one kid, named Julie, says they should just make their own musical. Mr. Martin and the rest of the kids think it's a great idea. They all think about what to do and Julie decides to mention something about a musical version of a horror film. They all think that sounds cool. Then, Julie and Mr. Martin simultaneously agree on "Saw." Sure, there will be blood. All the kids begin production on the musical and they all decide to work very hard on it, and then openining night approaches. Will the show be a success, or will it all go down in flames?
